HJC News - Vayigash

Please note the remainder of the fast schedule.

Mincha today is earlier than usual, at 4:30pm. The snow made it difficult this morning. But by this afternoon, driveways and roads will be clear enough to make getting to shul easier. The Shul's parking lot is being plowed as I type these words.

Condolences to Phil Setnik on the passing of his mother, Mrs Elaine Setnik. Shiva ends on Shabbos. Contact info for Phil was sent in an earlier email.

Condolences to Hillel Seltzer and family on the passing of Mrs Barbara Seltzer. Hillel and his brothers and aunts are sitting Shiva for Barbara Seltzer until Monday morning. The zoom contact info is at the very bottom of this email, beneath the times.

This Shabbos afternoon, I will speak about Reb Noson Sternhartz, Reb Noson of Breslov, the main talmid and purveyor of the Torah of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov and the leader of Breslover Chassidim after the passing of Rebbe Nachman. His Yohrtzeit is the 10th of Teves.

Have an easy fast.

Rabbi Ahron Lopiansky

Hello friends,

Over the past few months, during Shalosh Seudos time, I have been speaking about different great personalities of the Jewish past.  I came to the realization that we should not wait until a great person dies to begin appreciating him. This realization grew considerably when Rabbi Sacks passed away this year. I had made the decision to speak of him when he was alive, and his petira increased the urgency with which I feel we should know about great people so that we can learn from them while they are living life in this world.

So this past Shabbos, I spoke about Rabbi Ahron Lopiansky. I'm sure the name is familiar to some of you. He is currently the Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva of Greater Washington. He is also a prolific writer and thinker, accepted in all parts of the Orthodox spectrum, and in the wider Jewish world as well.

Two books that I mentioned on Shabbos that I would highly recommend to everyone reading this are linked below.

"Ben Torah for Life"  https://www.eshelpublications.com/store/p11/Orchos_Chaim%3A_Ben_Torah_For_Life.html

and

Time Pieces, a collection of essays on all the Yomim Tovim.

Rabbi Lopiansky also recently gave an interview/conversation that I also feel is worth the time of anyone who thinks about issues like Jewish identity and peoplehood.

A website has been set up with recordings of all kinds of his classes.

Have a wonderful Chanukah.

HJC News - Vayeishev -Chanukah-Shabbos Mevorchim

Condolences to the Schuster family on the passing of our beloved friend Harry Schuster A"H.

Please note that Mincha today is at 4:30pm. Due to Covid, our minyan is smaller than usual, and often starts later than the posted time. While this can be frustrating during the week, Shabbos Chanukah makes this far more problematic, as we need to light the Menorah in shul before Shabbos, with a Minyan guaranteed.  So please make every effort to allow us to start Mincha today at 4:30pm.

This Shabbos afternoon, I will be speaking about Rabbi Aaron Lopiansky shlita, the current Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva of Greater Washington.

Starting this Monday, sunrise will be late enough that we are once again forced to announce that Brochos on Tallis and Tefillin should be made after Yishtabach. (Times will vary day by day.) This continues until well into January.

This Shabbos is Shabbos Mevorchim. Rosh Chodesh Teves is this Wednesday. Shacharis on Rosh Chodesh Wednesday morning will start at 6:37am; and Brochos on Tallis and Tefillin will need to be made after Yishtabach.

It is with much pain that I must tell you that our dear friend Harry Schuster is niftar.  The levaya will be tomorrow (Thursday) at 3:00 P.M. at Zion memorial park on Northfield Rd.  At this time I am not aware of what restrictions due to Covid 19 will be in place, other than masking and social distancing.
May we all be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Yerushalayim.

Fwd:

Good evening, Members and friends of Heights Jewish Center Synagogue.

As the year end quickly closes in on us, I am asking you to consider Heights Jewish Center when making your final tax plans for the year.  Most Americans will use the standard deduction for this year, but:
In 2020, as part of the pandemic relief program in the U.S., taxpayers can deduct up to $300 in charitable donations, even if they choose to take the  standard deduction.

If you still need to allocate some of your meiser money, this is an ideal time to take advantage of this provision and to remember HJCS.  The link below has more information.  Be sure to consult your tax advisor to see if this is right for you.

On another note, If you have ever had BBQ from the Wanderingque, out of hackensack N.J., and you are craving it, please read on.  While they will not be stopping in Cleveland this year, Yoyo Moore has made arrangements to meet them on the road to pick up your orders and bring them to Cleveland for distribution from his home.  Please see the flier below.  Time is limited, as the order deadline is December 9, at 10 a.m.  For answers to any questions please contact yoyo directly at  yoyomarni@gmail.com    Please note that there will be a delivery fee of 10% of your total order for this service.  Heights Jewish Center is not benefiting, nor endorsing this endeavor.  We are passing on the information as a service to the community.

 rob altshuler,
 President, HJCS

Our delivery fees will be 10% of your overall order cost. NOTE THE DEADLINE. ( This company is not coming to Cleveland this time so we are meeting them on the highway down about an hour from Cleveland , So if you wish to our place your orders make sure you note that it is for pick up at the private MOORE residence and note the cost for our delivery fees). THANK YOU
