HJC Today's talk. Enjoy!

זכר רב טובך יביעו וצדקתך ירננו

"They will speak of the memory of Your abundant Goodness;
and sing of your Tzedaka."

What does this line mean? And how can saying it make me a happier person and better Jew?

HJC Alliyos for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

Dear Friend,

Once again we are conducting a silent auction via email for alliyos on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  The alliyos available are listed below.  Bidding starts at $36 per alliyah.  We may move your bid to a different alliyah (with your permission) in order to balance them out.  Last year was our best over the 12 years we have been auctioning the alliyos; we raised over $6800.  This year we have two extra alliyos because the first day is Shabbos.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not offer P’sichah (opening the Aron), carrying the second Sefer and all hagbos and gelilos.  The gabboim will assign those consistent with current shul policy.

We will once again make available P’sicha for Ne’ela on Yom Kippur.  This kavod will continue to be given to the Rav as it has been since I have been a member; however, we are now offering the opportunity to sponsor the Rav for this kavod.

Please note that in order to speed up our processes due to COVID-19, we will require your list of names for your Mi Shebeirach prior to Yom Tov.  If you are purchasing an alliyah for someone else, please let us know for whom it was purchased so we can obtain their list in advance.

As the Rabbi has reminded us in prior years:

The Mishna Berura (Ch.584:S.K.8) quotes the great compendium on all Yomim Noraim matters, the Mateh Ephraim, as follows:

"It is appropriate for every G-d fearing man to make an effort to get an Aliyah on the Yomim Noraim (Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur). Even in places where the Aliyos are usually auctioned off [to the wealthy], one should "purchase" an Aliya for that time of year for as much as his means allow.

"[And lest one think that there is something degrading about purchasing an Aliyah at such a holy time of year, the truth is] just the opposite: There is greater spiritual advantage in a Mitzvah that comes one's way through monetary expenditure than in a Mitzvah that has come one's way free of charge."

If you are interested in taking the initiative in acquiring this merit for yourself or someone else and investing in our Kehilla at the same time, please call the office (216-382-1958), or contact Martin Lipman at Martin.Lipman@iriworldwide.com

The alliyos are:

Rosh Hashanah, First Day

Cohen

Levi

Shlishi

Rivi'i

Chamishi

Shishi

Shivi’i

Maftir

Rosh Hashanah, Second Day

HJC New Video: HaMelech! Why a King.

Hello friends,

Please watch the latest talk, on the topic of Rosh Hashana, on why we insist on seeing Hashem as our King during this time.

https://www.facebook.com/hjcs.613/videos/334880704320027/

Food for thought and inspiration. Feedback is always appreciated.

(PS If you plan to join us in Shul for Rosh Hashana, please remember to contact the office ASAP. Spaces are very limited this year, and we have to adopt a first come-first served system.)

Take care!

HJC News - Shoftim

Mazel Tov to Phil and Kim Setnik on Zaki's recent engagement.

Important message:
The times for this Shabbos are listed below.
HOWEVER, unless enough people reply to this email and confirm that they plan to attend Mincha tonight at 7:00pm, and Mincha tomorrow at 7:50pm, there will not be a minyan for Mincha today or tomorrow.  Please reply to this email as early in the day as you can, to confirm your attendance at each of our Shabbos minyanim.  We hope to be able to send out an email later today that we have enough people for both Minchas.

There are two times listed as "earliest candle-lighting". That can be confusing. I'll explain briefly. There are two main Halachic opinions regarding the earliest time to light candles and accept Shabbos. We generally subscribe to the earliest of those two. If a man is planning to daven Mincha with us today, candles should not be lit at home before that later "early" time, 7:24pm.

On Shabbos after Mincha, I will be speaking about Rabbi Meshulam Lowy, the Tosher Rebbe (of Quebec) whose Yohrzeit was the 27th of Av.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Davidovich
